How Long Should A Fragrance Last?
How long should a fragrance last? Discover how long different fragrance types last and the science behind longevity, sillage, projection and nose blindness.
How long your fragrance lasts comes down to a number of things and, unfortunately, there is no single correct answer. Some fresh citrus colognes may fade within 2 or 3 hours, while richer eau de parfums and parfums can remain noticeable for much longer.
As a general guide:
| Fragrance Type | Typical Longevity |
|---|---|
| Eau de Cologne | 1–3 hours |
| Eau de Toilette | 3–5 hours |
| Eau de Parfum | 5–8 hours |
| Parfum / Extrait de Parfum | 6–12+ hours |
These are useful estimates, not fixed rules. Two fragrances with the same concentration can perform very differently because of the materials used, the structure of the scent and your own skin.
A fresh bergamot fragrance, for example, is naturally going to behave differently from a dense amber, vanilla or oud fragrance. One is designed to lift and refresh while the other is built to linger.
Longevity is one of the most discussed parts of fragrance, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. A scent that disappears quickly is not always poor quality. In the same way, a fragrance that lasts for 12 hours is not automatically better. The best fragrance is one that performs in a way that suits its purpose.
What Does Fragrance Longevity Actually Mean?
Fragrance longevity refers to how long a scent remains detectable after it has been applied.
This can be broken down into three stages:
- Projection is how far the fragrance pushes out from your skin.
- Sillage is the trail the fragrance leaves behind as you move.
- Longevity is how long the fragrance remains noticeable overall.
A fragrance can last a long time without projecting strongly. This is often called a skin scent, meaning it stays close to the body rather than filling a room. Equally, some fragrances project loudly for the first hour, then soften quickly.
Why Can’t I Smell My Fragrance After A While?
One of the most common reasons for not being able to smell your fragrance is called nose blindness. When your brain becomes used to a smell, it will start to filter it out. You may think your fragrance has disappeared, while people around you can still smell it.
This is especially common when fragrance is sprayed close to the face or neck. If you heavily apply in the same area every day, you may stop noticing it even when it is still there.
Is A Long-Lasting Fragrance Always Better?
Longevity is useful, but it should not be the only measure of quality.
A light citrus cologne that lasts 3 hours may be doing exactly what it was designed to do. It can be refreshing, clean and easy to wear. You may not want that kind of fragrance to last for 12 hours.
On the other hand, if you are buying a rich evening fragrance, a date-night scent or something for colder weather, you may expect more depth and staying power.
A long lasting fragrance is not always a good thing. A good fragrance should last long enough for its purpose without outstaying its welcome
For work, 4 to 6 hours may be ideal. For evening wear, 6 to 8 hours is often more desirable. For a fresh gym bag or summer holiday fragrance, 2 to 4 hours may be the perfect balance.
Rather than looking for the fragrance that lasts the longest, look for one that performs the best for the moment. Sometimes that means a fresh scent that lasts a few hours. Sometimes it means a deeper scent that stays with you all day.
The best fragrance is not always the loudest or the longest-lasting. It is the one that works best for you.
